Sound to Silver Bench

A recorded whistle bends a ring Livia has already cast. The piece cannot tear or pass through itself, and the finger hole keeps its size; casting checks decide how far the sound may push.

How the sound moves the metal

time→

position along the metal, from one end of the open ring to the other

pitch→

lift: the band slides along the finger, up above the whistle's median pitch, down below it; ±0.5 octave is full scale

level→

swell: louder moments push the outer metal away from the finger

pitch slope→

lean: a rising sweep tilts the outer metal one way, a falling sweep the other

Each moment is spread over a few millimetres of metal, so the silver bends instead of creasing.

Why it cannot break apart

Every point keeps its angle around the finger. It may move outward from the finger and slide along it, never inward. Outward push grows with distance from the finger, and lift moves a whole cross-section at once, so two points of the ring can never land in the same place: the surface cannot tear, fold through itself or close the finger hole.

What can still go wrong is the casting. A wall can thin below 0.6 mm, or an opening can narrow below 0.4 mm so the investment cannot hold it apart. The assay measures both. Turn on push along surface to see the usual audio-reactive approach: it erodes thin wires and drives the metal through itself.

Rays re-cast on every vertex of the original STL (about 200,000 triangles) after deformation. The safe limit is the largest push that keeps at most 0.1% of the surface past the wall or opening limit or through itself. "2×" doubles that push. "Live estimate" is what this page computes in the browser at that push. "Naive" pushes along the surface normal by the all-gesture limit.
